Description:

Rawat Vongla depicts a famed Buddha's hand gesture called Vitarka Mudra. The palm faces outwards and a circle is made with the thumb and index, while the other fingers point upwards. In this work, the thumb and index hold a seed, which is here the Wheel of Dharma's axis. Artist Rawat signs and writes his name in Thai at the bottom of the painting.

The Dharma is the teachings and the methods of the Buddha. Vitarka Mudra is a peaceful gesture that symbolizes teaching, giving instruction and reason. The Wheel of Dharma is a symbol that represents the Buddha's teaching of the path to enlightenment. The Thai artist uses all these elements as devotional symbols.
