Description:
In this painting by Pakaphong Thongkaing, a Deva rides a wild horse. The angel holds in her hand a white lotus, which is a symbol of purity. Dust spirals upwards as the horse kicks and rears up while a golden sun shines in the background. The artist paints the scene with acrylics and signs his name in Thai at the bottom of the painting.
The artist explains: "In the old days, Thai people strongly believed in the zodiac. They used the signs of the zodiac, represented by animals, to foresee newly born people personality, strengths and weaknesses. These animals were often painted on murals in temples. It preserved the belief and reminded people of their own animal sign and personality. I often depicted these animals on the temples walls. Here I present them in my own styles. Horses are said to be clever, generous, kind-hearted, energetic, bright, cheerful, warm-hearted, communicative, intelligent and able. They also like entertainment and large crowds."

About the Artist:
This painting was made by Pakaphong Thongkaing. The artist grew up in Chiang Dao, a forested district of Chiang Mai province. He studied at Rajaphat University. He is married and has two daughters. He paints in his home in Chiang Mai.
