Description:
Prathoung Kamphat paints a large water buffalo head with a palette of acrylics. The artist ponders on the change in Thailand. "Materialism is growing very fast in Thailand and is definitely encroaching on local ways of life. The more it grows, the more we lose our traditional ways. There seems to be no way to stop new generations from forgetting old local Thai customs. The buffalo played an important role in rice cultivation and symbolizes an older, simpler way of life when Thailand was an agricultural society. Nowadays, machines have replaced the buffalo. The frustrated face looking at the invader is clearly irritated but doesn't know what to do. Can something be done to stop the invader? The answer seems to be one that he doesn't really like but what can he do? What can we do? Is this the normality of change that comes with time?" explains the artist.

About the Artist:
This painting was made by Prathoung Kamphat. He was born on 25 November 1963 in Chiang Mai. "My work is always about the nature of change in time. Different objects represent changes in time and motion that we cannot stop," says the artist. He lives and creates his artistic works in Chiang Mai.
