Description:

Working from their villages in northern Thailand, the Akha artisans craft this shoulder bag in the traditional cross-stitch appliqué Lomi pattern. The distinguishing characteristic of Lomi style is the use of appliqué. The artisan cut rows of connected geometric shapes from a thin strip of cloth, and lay these upon another thin strip of colored cloth. Next they outline the pattern with a strand of three or four twined threads placed along the design borders and stitch the whole onto the strip, which is next attached to the front of the bag. They also embroider patterns such as crude geometric designs, stylized trees, mazes, circular stitches, connected squares etc.

Depending on their mood, memories, imagination and their own taste, the women varies these traditional geometric designs, making the bag you will receive truly unique. This particular piece, named Lomi Legacy, is hand-woven with cotton, colored from natural dyes and entirely decorated by hand.

Color discrepancies may occur between this handmade item and your computer screen.

About the Artisan:

This shoulder bag is entirely handcrafted by an Akha artisan. The making process starts with the harvest of cotton, which the woman then spins into rolls. After weaving and dyeing, she cuts a strip from the cloth and embroiders and appliqués half of this, which will be the front of the bag. After attaching the shoulder strap she borders the design with color bands, rows of beads, cowries and coins to the extent desired, creating a spectacular decorative design.
