Description:
Hanuman charms Suphanna Matcha - Demon Ravana's daughter. Hanuman stands on the beautiful mermaid as she floats in green waters. Hanuman gently holds her arm and whispers to her ear. Rawat Vongla captures the epic scene in stylized details. He signs and writes his name in Thai at the bottom of the piece.
The Ramakian is the Thai adaptation of the Hindu epic Ramayana. This adaptation includes the encounter between Hanuman, the monkey general, and Suphanna Matcha, the demon Ravana's daughter. In this encounter, Hanuman and his army of monkeys throw large rocks in the water to build a causeway between Sri Lanka and India. The mermaids prevent them from building it by carrying all the rocks away. After several unsuccessful attacks to stop them, Hanuman woos the mermaid princess ... which results in them falling in love with each other. She will eventually change her mind, returns the rocks and later give birth to Hanuman's son.
